Nothing wrong with the side stand, rider need to get off bike before turning off the electrical power.

I know how to unload the bike. It’s step 2 that causes the angst when parked on a down hill slope. I still think this is a poor design compared to other BMW bikes that can park right next to me with no problem. This past weekend I was with a friend who had a 1200GS and he parked in the same orientation as me with plenty of lean into the upslope. My RS was nearly vertical and after putting on the center stand had a slight lean following the down slope. Short term solution is to park differently and avoid the situation altogether. Long term solution is to look to change how the side stand is deployed.

I used a dremel and ground down some of the sidestand stop and this helped a little. Both of us run the the ESA on 2 up to raise the back of the bike and this makes the bike lean more when parked. If I remember I get my but up off the seat before shutting the bike off. I have long legs so it's not hard to do, my problem is remembering to do it :) Lee |

No gearbox to hold the bike in place on a slope. So my solution is to carry a Velcro strap and wrap it around the front brake level to keep it from rolling away. But with motorcycles with mechanical gearboxes, placing the gearbox in first gear will hold it in place on a pretty steep hill.

I presume BMW do not "make" all the individual components but assemble the parts from a variety of suppliers as most motor manufacturers do these days. |

Presumably, the RS stands so upright to stop oil gathering in the left cylinder and producing the cloud of smoke on start up (which it still does if parked on the side-stand for a week)?

I think that the "conclusion" that the side stand is designed for bikes in the UK (and Oz, New Zealand and any other country that drives on the left) is probably the reason. My side stand has never been "too tall" Even when I had a flat rear tyre (it deflated overnight due to a Tek bolt through the sidewall), the bike stayed steady and upright on the side stand.

A great deal of discussion about the side stand's imperfection. If that's the big complaint on the R12RS, the bikes must really be very reliable. The side stand on my '60 R60 was similarly flawed. The side stand on my '87 XL600 was too short and there was no centerstand. In part due to the extreme lean when on the stand, it eventually became bent under the violence of kick-starting. I can live with the side stand on my RS...
