Electronics » Do you use the quick shifter for down shifting into first?

I started playing around with down shifting for slowing down to stops and like being able to slow to under 5 mph with just using engine compression alone. On my ride yesterday morning I had three instances where, using the quick shifter to go from 2nd to 1st, it put me into first and then quickly into neutral. I don't recall doing anything different when shifting down on other instances, or through other gears. Has anyone else had this happen on their bike?

I read in reviews that the quick shift function was for 2nd gear and up/down, but not for 1-2 / 2-1.

No, never. It’s not good at that

I only ever use the quick shifter up or down in 3rd gear and above and in the upper 2/3rds of the rev range as I fear the clunky old gearbox wouldn't stand it. (Don't start me ranting about the agricultural box on these things)

My '16 RS would end up in neutral once in a while. My '17 RS has done that maybe twice in 23,000 miles. I use the quick shifter to go into 1st a lot.

I use the quick shifter to shift all the way down to first gear and have never had a problem. In fact, it does a better job at downshifting than I do. However, I do tend to shift when the revs are not too high in the upper gears. Up-shifting is a bit clunky, especially when shifting from first to second to third, but if you get the right combination of revs and throttle, it seems to work pretty good. It would appear that getting the system set up just right is the key. But how that is accomplished is a mystery to me.

Just down to second for me. This was early training from other bikes where you had to be either in first or neutral before the bike stopped rolling. If you stopped at a light in 2nd gear, it was a bear to get in the proper gear. Not so much with the RS, but old habits.

Use the QS all the way down to first without issues (2017 RS with "improved" gearbox). Very very rarely it will go to 1st and then "loose" the gear and go into N.
But this only happens when I engine brake quite aggressively, going downhill into a hairpin in 1st gear, for example.

I use it all the time going down to first with no issues (2018 RS), On upshifts I only use to 4th, 5th, and 6th, as it's too abrupt and clunky on the lower gears.
Love the throttle blipping on downshifts.

I love quick shifting into first - what a great sound. No blip needed. I feel like a pro.

My recent experience when using the QS to go from 2nd to 1st was always at speeds below 15 mph. There was at least two occasions where it would engage 1st with some brief engine compression braking and then pop into neutral. I will have to trying some experimenting to see how often it does it at 10 mph or below vs. 10 - 15 mph.
From the responses here it sounds like I may have this happening more often than the rest, based on one morning and 3 times winding up in neutral. Thanks to all who responded.

And regarding using the QS for upshifting -- I avoid doing 1st to 2nd because the change is so abrupt. 2nd to 3rd is better and very smooth going up from there.
