RE: Windscreens - Again! - 4

Further to my post and a bit of lockdown seems that the wind noise for me is not buffeting of the helmet, it’s where the slipstream of the screen flows off and hits my shoulders And then deflecting up to the Bottom of the helmet creating noisy air.

Solutions: barn door screen? No thanks
Mini screen: only good for summer and not winter commuting
Redesign of the screen: any offers??.
Put up and shut up - nothing is perfect but the 1250RS nearly is. Ear plugs and dip down below the screen at speed.

Unless anyone has any better ideas.

I just received a calsci extra large screen from eBay.


It’s uglier than anything I ever saw but does the job with wind buffeting. . I think I will be keeping it for long touring only , as it’s too embarrassing to keep in for every day use. 😂

hi, after trying to take all the info in about screens, i decided to stick with a stock one, may be add a Vario to it. so i was on ebay looking for a om tinted screen , Sycamore BMW £159 or offer. so £130 taken & it looks the bees knees well pleased

For me the standard screen is OK. Bolted in the upper mounting holes so it's low, movement in the low position, not much turbulence. Pull it up for a bit more protection for a long highway stretch.
The perfect screen only exists on full-size tourers.

OMG it´s awful, but yes it does work and you can see over the top too, which is a bonus.

I´m going to be so embarassed when my mate see it!

r1200rs.
stock screen in highest possible config. down position only when REALLY hot.
ear plugs or earbuds. currently using beats-x wireless-decent kit. Listen to quiet music, or podcasts. or just nothing.
spandexy-type material neck gaiter over the ears is game changer.

I'm pleased. Actually very well pleased vs r1150r with sport screen it was always LOUD and "buffety".

IF my wife and I ride together, we have helmet coms. so I wear no hearing ptorection and just go slower, which also helps lol :)

After using the XL calsci screen on my trip around Spain, I can definitively say that it is AWESOME.

It might look pretty ugly, ok yes it IS pretty ugly, but I don´t think that I could live without it now.

I am 6´1, 33" inseam. In the top screw position in it´s highest position there is literally no wind flow hitting me anywhere , but best of all is that I can still see over the top of the screen.

It does give you some strange warped vision sometime if you happen to look down and through it, so try to avoid doing that or the road looks like it has a huge dip in it and you can panic the first time you see it.

However at 160kmh on long straight roads, it was the best experience that I have ever had .

Downsides are lack of windflow through helmet at highest position, which on warm days is a definite drawback.

I'm curious...when I test rode a 1250RS, the windscreen was in the lower mounting holes. I tried the low position, and the high position with the screen mounted in those holes, and the noise was bad. How big a difference is obtainable when mounting the screen in the upper mounting holes, and pulling the screen to the "high" position? Enough to reduce/eliminate buffeting wind noise?

I ask because I'm really getting the itch to get down to "one bike that does it all". I love my RR, and enjoy my F800GT, but at 73 I'm getting weary of owning and maintaining two bikes. Seems like the RS would give me the attributes of each (sport AND tour), with no chain, and power somewhere between the GT (90 HP) and the RR (200 HP).

If I can solve the wind noise thing, then the purchase would be a lot easier to do. Thanks.

With the stock screen, top mounting holes and upper pivot position was best for me. I'm 6'-1" with a 33.5 inseam. I currently run the Puig screen which offers similar performance in the low mount and pivot position.
