I might do that on a trailer with 4 straps being available, and preferably a trailer with a clamp for a front wheel so you do not need to use the side stand and can have the bike vertical

on a ferry, you get 1 strap so over the seat and strapped to a deck hoop either side is adequate, even for a rough Biscay trip

But, if the strap compresses the bike's suspension, any significant amount, the bike will become more vertical; shifting the CG to the edge of the 3pt triangle. Once the GC touches the edge of the triangle created by the 3pt stance, the friction between the deck strap and your seat is the only thing keeping the bike from falling to the right side.

the stevedore uses a thick pad on the seat, on Brittany Ferries at least. The strap is very tight. Plus, the bikes are crammed in so tight...

Not arguing that it appears to work. I'm just saying, once you've compressed the suspension by tightening the strap..........the bike is upright or tilting to the right side in the case of my RS. It's the tension in the strap and the friction between the strap/pad/seat that's stabilizing the bike (with transmission in gear).
