You did well there. I've also had the 'not insured if parked within a certain radius from home' clause in the past, back when I had a garage about half a mile away. I did try to explain that it should be reasonable to assume that on occasion I might need to park it at home for a short period, such as when loading with luggage immediately prior to setting off on a trip, and that I should be covered when doing so. They weren't having any of it though, so I accepted it as a risk and tried to minimise the time it was left at my house. Meh.

The only upside to having a remote garage was the entertainment I derived from the funny looks I used to get from almost everyone whilst riding my bicycle to and fro, dressed in full leathers. For an occasional giggle, I'd leave my helmet on too.

do they? well they are messing about with the competitions and rewards and I am not happy. I have also made complaint about the endorsement re not paying out claims if the bike is stolen within 500 metres of my house. Said it was unreasonable and should not be legal under contract law (who knows but sounds good). Written to Rip Off Britain as well, doubt they will do anything as it is about motorbikes.

They are forcing bikers to try and fight off people who may be armed who are trying to steal your bike, bloody stupid.

It would be interesting to see if the clause from Bennetts has been tested in case law. It might be worth posing the question on the Honest John website or one of the magazines that has a legal page from someone like White Dalton.

Thank you, so are you saying that if I am threatened with violence by someone attempting to steal my bike within 500 metres of my house I will be covered which I assume was indirectly what Jason stated but I want to be clear.

On facebook there are numerous examples of people trying to or stealing bikes from the home even when the owner is there so not too extreme.

The scenario you have described is an extreme circumstance which is outside the normal policy terms. Therefore, the insurer would look at this differently should this happen. This is not stated in the policy document as the likelihood of this happening is fairly minimal and we are not able to list all scenarios.

The standard meaning of this endorsement is if you leave the bike on the road or on your driveway instead of in your garage as agreed and the bike gets stolen, it would not be covered.

I am not certain if this is a request or complaint as I feel that the endorsement set out below is unreasonable and cannot be legal under contract law.

Garaging

You have agreed that you will keep your vehicle in your private locked garage or building at your home address to which only you and anyone with your permission have access. If a theft or attempted theft of your vehicle happens within a 500 metre radius of
your home address when the vehicle is not locked in this garage or building we will not pay the claim. This restriction does not apply to any loss or damage occurring whilst your motorcycle is parked away from your home during the course of a journey.

If you consider the wording this means that I cannot wash my motorbike on my driveway as if I am standing by the bike and 2 armed robbers attack me and steal my bike I would not be covered by insurance even though I may have put my life at risk to save my bike
as I know I would not be covered. This would also be the case if riding off on a ride for the first 500 metres. I will therefore have to risk injury to stop someone with a weapon from taking my bike.

This does not seem reasonable and I cannot believe that it would stand up to scrutiny under contract law. This endorsement is forcing me to put my life at risk due to the unfair endorsement.

Please can you remove this endorsement from my insurance certificate as unfair.
